The Engineering Process

The engineering process is a series of steps that engineers use to develop functional products and processes. It is an iterative method that can be used to build prototypes and enhance existing solutions. It’s also a great tool to improve problem-solving skills and to develop the “design under constraints” mindset. The process of engineering design is similar to the scientific method, however it differs in that scientists conduct experiments, while engineers work with imagination and design.

Identify the Problem

Engineers must first determine what the project needs in order to be successful. This requires a lot of brainstorming and the engineer must frequently take into account constraints (e.g. materials, time and tools) while coming up with solutions. This requires an engineer to assess all possible solutions by identifying their strengths and weaknesses, before picking the most suitable solution to achieve the goals of the project.

Create Ideas

Engineers can choose to employ different approaches to solve problems ranging from brainstorming and discussion to 2D CAD modeling and animation. The solutions they come up with can be visualized and compared with the problem’s specifications to help identify the most suitable solution.

Now that the final solution has been decided upon, it is time to create a model of the product. This could be as easy as sketching on paper or as a model that is constructed using CAD software. This process gives engineers the chance to test the final product and determine if it is in line with the intended goals.
